Fun Ways to Beat the Winter Blahs

It’s hard to beat the magical beauty of a winter day when sparkling, pristine snow blankets trees and hillsides as far as we can see. For sights like these, we’re happy to brave the cold.

Of course, by February, we’re not so happy about that anymore. The snow we’ve been shoveling has completely lost its charm. Holiday decorations have been taken down. To add insult to injury, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. According to legend, that means six more weeks of chilly weather to endure. It seems like it will never end.

Happily, there’s still more fun to be had if we know where to look. We can leave those winter blahs behind, and here are five fun ways to do that:

Build a Snowman

Why leave that up to the kids? Bundle up and get out there! Use your imagination to create a cute, one-of-a-kind mascot for your front yard that will bring cheer to everyone who crosses your snowman’s path. Not into snowmen? Make snow angels. How long has it been since you’ve done that?

Thaw Out Some Wild Blueberries.

Ah, the sweet taste of wild blueberries on a warm summer day. When you pick a basketful, be sure to freeze some for a winter emergency. On a bleak, freezing morning when a blizzard is howling outside, thaw them out to enjoy. It’ll remind you that yes, warmth and summer really will come again, and yes, someday you’ll truly be able to ditch your parka, gloves, and snow boots again.

Cook up a Storm

What’s better than spending a frosty day puttering around your warm, cozy kitchen cooking something hearty and comforting? It’s the perfect time to make the lasagna masterpiece that takes an entire day to prepare or to whip up a huge batch of the stew you’ve loved since you were a child.

Declare a Snow Day.

Yes, adults can have a snow day, too! Take time out to just slow down. Read that book you’ve had on your nightstand for ages but haven’t had time to start. Spend time on your favorite hobby – it’s been far too long since you have. Whatever you enjoy doing, but never seem to make enough time for, today’s the day to do it.

Embrace the Weather

If we can’t beat it, join it! Take a walk outside and enjoy the beauty of a clear, crisp winter day. Go figure skating. Break out that old pair of skis or snowshoes and make the most of the winter weather.

After a day of outdoor fun, the best is yet to come: there’s something wonderful about the simple act of coming in from the cold and being enveloped in the warmth of home. It’s something that warms your soul as well as your body.

It’s a feeling that cures the winter blahs every single time.
